VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican will unveil the latest installment in its social media transformation next week – a Facebook page dedicated to the upcoming beatification of Pope John Paul II, officials said.

The site, which will link to video highlights of John Paul’s 27-year papacy, is designed to promote the May 1 beatification. But it may well continue beyond given the global and enduring interest in the late pontiff, Vatican officials told The Associated Press.

The Vatican’s first attempt at an event-themed Facebook page – to promote Pope Benedict XVI’s September trip to the United Kingdom – is still active six months later and updated near-daily with 10,000-15,000 regular fans checking in, said Monsignor Paul Tighe, the No. 2 in the Vatican’s social communications office.

“What we found is that Facebook doesn’t just share information, it creates community,” Tighe said in an interview Friday. “People begin talking to each other and sharing ideas.”

That interactivity – and the potential it brings to the church’s evangelization mission – is behind the Vatican’s new social media push, the culmination of which will be launched at Easter with a new Vatican information web portal whose contents are specifically designed to be tweeted, posted and blogged.

The portal will serve as a one-stop-shop aggregator of news from the Vatican’s various information sources: Vatican Radio, Vatican Television, the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See’s press office and Fides, the Vatican’s missionary news agency, Tighe said.

The Vatican’s current website – http://www.vatican.va – will remain since that’s more of a stable site with basic information about the Holy See, key Vatican documents and offices, and papal activities.

The new site, rolled out first in English and Italian and then other languages, will be more news-based, bringing together onto one page the current disorganized web presence of Vatican media.

Designed thematically, with each format’s take on, say, the Japan earthquake or the Libyan uprising posted together, it will be multimedia focused but specifically designed for social media use, so people can tweet, post and blog its contents onto their own friends and fans, Tighe said.

“For us it will be a beginning of drawing on the riches of what we have, of our existing communications apparatus, and integrating that to ensure that its formally working with new media,” he said.

The Vatican’s communications and public relations woes are well known: muddled papal messages, flat-footed responses to crises like the sex abuse scandal and a certain lack of Internet savvy that allowed, to cite one egregious case, for the pope to lift the excommunication of a Holocaust-denying bishop. (Benedict now says he never would have rehabilitated the bishop had he known his views about Jews, which were widely available with a Google search.)

That said, the Holy See has improved getting its message out online, with a dedicated YouTube channel and Twitter accounts, and its increasing presence on Facebook. Pope Benedict XVI has spoken out recently about how the church’s message can get out effectively and in entirely new ways using the interactivity of social media.

“A lot of our communications in the past was: I have a message. I broadcast it. TV takes it, radio takes it, newspaper takes it, and people passively receive it,” Tighe said. “With the Internet you have this possibility of getting people’s comments, getting their responses, and also of hearing their questions.”

Benedict himself will take a step in that direction on April 22, Good Friday, when he responds to questions posed by the faithful that were submitted online. His prerecorded responses will air on Italian state television, and presumably then find their way onto YouTube.

“This is a beginning, in a simple way, of allowing the pope to interact with the questions of people and allowing people a direct form of access to the pope,” Tighe said. “With time we’ll see how different initiatives can develop, but the commitment there is to interactivity, to engagement.”

“We needed that win,” Blazers guard Andre Miller said. “I tried to bring some energy down the stretch. It could have easily went the other way. It was back and forth a little bit, but we were able to make some big plays.”

Wade didn’t have the only big night for Miami. James finished with 31 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, who are the 12th team in NBA history to have a 12-game winning streak and five-game losing streak in the same season.

“How do we explain it? We can’t,” James said. “This isn’t rock bottom for us. Crazy thing is, we could lose every game and still make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.”

After Wade and James, help was fleeting. Mario Chalmers scored 10, and Bosh was held to seven points on 3 for 11 shooting.

“Certainly not easy right now and frankly, we don’t have a lot of answers on how to get over this hump. The only thing we can do is keep on grinding and not … let … go … of … the … rope,” Spoelstra said, pausing between those last words for emphasis. “These are heartbreaking losses. Guys are putting everything they have into them.”

Miller and Brandon Roy each scored 14 for the Blazers, who won their seventh straight on the road and fourth straight overall. Nicolas Batum scored 11 and Wesley Matthews added 10 for Portland.

“Tonight, it wasn’t about Miami as opposed to the challenge was to ourselves,” Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. “Miami is a very good team. We knew that they would come out with a sense of urgency. It was a challenge for us. We knew that if we want to become one of those elite teams we have to go out and play.”

The Blazers’ bench outscored Miami’s 41-8, easily enough to keep Miami’s doldrums going strong.

“There’s guys on the bench who can help us,” Wade said.

And it gets no easier for the Heat: The two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers, now winners of a league-high eight straight, come in on Thursday night.

In Atlanta, where the Lakers won on Tuesday, Kobe Bryant was predicting that Miami would be ready for the champs.

“It’s a perfect set-up for them to get back on track,” Bryant said. “They have no options but to fight, but to play their hearts out. This is going to be a big challenge for us. … They’ve lost five games in a row now and they’re looking at this game as being the game that turns this around.”

There were moments on Tuesday when it looked as if this game would be the turnaround.

Portland wasn’t going to let that happen. Whenever Miami tried making any sort of run, the Blazers had an answer.

They clamped down defensively on everybody but Wade and James, and there was a 9 1/2-minute stretch of the second half where no one in a Heat jersey besides Wade scored.

The Heat made one late run from a nine-point deficit, starting with a 3-pointer by Mike Bibby and getting within two on a dunk by James with 4:35 left, but when the Blazers were up 103-94 and running out the clock with a minute left, many of the fans who remained were booing.

“Our confidence level, me and D-Wade’s confidence level being the leaders of the team, won’t go down,” James said.

Wallace and Roy are not exactly ordinary bench players, having a combined 749 starts in 902 career appearances. But with Miami’s bench struggling of late anyway, that Portland duo turned the reserve battle into a one-sided fight, outscoring the Heat backups 26-5 in the first half as the Blazers took a 57-51 lead.

Miami got within two points on five occasions within a span of 5 1/2 minutes in the third quarter – with Portland answering every time, four of those scores coming on the very next possession. “It was all about Raheem,” said Rays manager Joe Maddon, who invited the Buccaneers coach and his staff to spend a day in spring training with the AL East champions.

“I gave him the game ball,” Maddon said. “He did a great job with the pitching change. … There was nice conversation during the course of the game. It was a fun day.”

Morris posed for pictures with the umpire crew before the game and signed autographs afterward for fans lining the railing up the first base line adjacent to the home team dugout.

The day began with a long-drive golf contest won by center fielder B.J. Upton. Although Morris declined Maddon’s invitation to take batting practice, receivers coach Eric Yarber accepted and fielded ground balls from the skipper, too.

“It takes a lot of guts to come out and do what he did because he hasn’t played in 30 years,” Maddon said of Yarber, who received some hitting advice from All-Star Evan Longoria and Rays first base coach George Hendrick.

Asked if he believed any of the Rays might be capable of helping the Buccaneers, Morris joked that he detected the “swagger” of a linebacker in Longoria and that he might be able to convert Upton into a productive cornerback if he could get him to tackle.

As for standing in for Maddon against the Blue Jays?

“All I’ve got to do is look serious and spit seeds,” the NFL’s youngest coach said.

Right-hander James Shields gave up a home run on his second pitch of the game and later got pulled by Morris, who surprised the Rays starter when he walked out of the dugout after Shields had thrown 60 pitches in 3 1-3 innings.

Rajai Davis hit the early homer off Shields, who gave up another run in the second on a groundout.

“It was funny,” said Shields, who smiled as Morris, the entire infield and catcher Kelly Shoppach closed in on the mound.

“He walked out there and said: `What do we do now?’ I was like, `You’re supposed to get the ball from me,” Shields said. “I handed him the ball and he said: ‘So what are we doing after the game?’ It was pretty fun out there.”

Justin Ruggiano singled with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win it for the Rays. Tampa Bay’s Robinson Chirinos hit a tying triple with two outs in the ninth.

Morris and Maddon have become friends over the past couple of years.

The Rays manager, who played quarterback in high school and as a freshman in college, said some day he’d like to attend a Bucs practice and maybe run the scout team offense.

Morris said Maddon was welcome any time, jokingly adding that maybe the manager could sit on the shoulders of 6-foot-6 Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman to see over the defensive line.

“Every time I sit around this man, I pick up something – whether it’s developing a concept or developing a belief,” Morris said, adding that he enjoys watching how the manager interacts with players and his staff.

Maddon said he benefits from the relationship, too.

“I enjoy bouncing things off of him. He’s got a lot of great ideas,” the manager said. “And when I’m around his entire coaching staff, you could get a sense of the way they work as a team. I really enjoy picking up on that also.”
